QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
Happy new year!
When I relesead QStar1 some of you remarked that it is not working in High resolution / high colour modes.
Well, now it does! And also has a new set of large sprites!
I tested it in mode 16, mode 32 and mode 33 on QPC2, SMSQmulator, Q68 and QIMSI Gold. Please flag any errors that I might have missed.
The attached (zipped) win image includes both versions - previous mode 8 version and the new high colour version.
Have Fun!
Later Edit: Download the latest version here: https://www.theqlforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=61375#p61375

Re: QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
Tested successfully in several different configurations, left to right:
- QPC2
- QemuLator
- QIMSI Gold - Mode 33
- QXL - Mode 32
No error messages or issues. Great, great job Andrew. Congratulations

Surpassing expectations once again. Thanks Andrew. And thanks for the tests napsternds.
Re: QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
Not having tried it yet, how was the speed on Q68 and QIMSI? Peter's warned us often enough that using high colour modes can slow down those systems a fair bit.napsternds wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 4:06 pm Tested successfully in several different configurations, left to right:

Re: QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
I do not have a Q68, but on QIMSI Gold DISP_MODE 6 (512 x 384 pixels in mode 33), performance is great. High colour modes at higher resolutions slow down the system and are not recommended, but Mode 6 works great.dilwyn wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 9:42 pm how was the speed on Q68 and QIMSI? Re: QStar1 revisited - High Colour mode
Hi,
On a Q68, run Qstar1 in DISP_MODE 2 (512×256 Mode 33) or DISP_MODE 6 (512x384 Mode 33), where there is no slow down in Q68 High Colour graphics modes.
I do not have a QIMSI Gold yet, but I assume that works with same screen modes.

On Q68 or QIMSI Gold play QStar168_exe in DISP_MODE 6 (512x384 Mode 33) - the game needs 512x384 resolution or higher. DISP_MODEs 3, 5 and 7 are supported, but might be slow.Derek_Stewart wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 10:29 pm Hi,

For DISP_MODE 0 and 1 use QStar_exe
DISP_MODE 2 and 4 are not supported.
