Yes, the Retro-Printer is the answer (it was available until a couple of weeks ago when we realised that the factory had made a mistake).
The physical connection is not the only problem - modern printers expect the computer to do all of the hard work for them - they do not understand plain text any more!

Of course - it just uses CUPS to do the printing
Connecting a remote printer to CUPS is not as simple as a USB printer, but it works.
