An alternative to using switches could be to give the existing rubber pads that push the membrane a coat of conductive paint so they short the pads on the PCB. I can alter the current PCB switch pads so they also form fingers so the conductive pad always makes contact. 
If it doesn't work the PCB still gives the option of fitting switches.
