If you enter PE_BGON in QPC2 (or install/LRESPR pie or pex in your Minerva boot program), program windows which are in the background will be updated (only their visible parts), as on the Amiga. (Amiga was the first affordable machine, which supports this, all other affordable machines except the QL didn't even have preemptive multitasking)

Re: Vote: Who has PE_BGON ON (PIE/PEX) in its standard boot program?
And that's the main reason. I'm using working environments on my QLs that load a large number of extensions - I feel there's simply not enough RAM on a TC to justify this luxury feature. The limited resources (screen space and memory) on a TC or smaller QL really don't make lots of programs running in parallel a very enjoyable experience. On the other hand, background updates on SMSQ/E (even on GC and SGC) come integrated in the system - you can't get rid of them, so why not use them.ql_freak wrote: Sun Aug 24, 2025 12:58 am p.s.: But it seems, most of you have PE_BGON (pie/pex extension for Minerva) off. Why? When it was first available on Minerva (PIE), it was the time, where I really was using the Pointer/Extended Environment. Before it was horrible, as any program paused if it had to do any screen output. (I have had used it even with TrumpCard [less than 1 MByte RAM!] and it never has been a problem - YES IT EATS RAM)

Theres no need to enter PE_BGON in SMSQ/E. Its the default setting. True masochists may wish to enter PE_BGOFF to turn off background updating if they want. Perhaps to remind themselves of "Ye Good Olde Days".tofro wrote: Sun Aug 24, 2025 9:13 am <>

Re: Vote: Who has PE_BGON ON (PIE/PEX) in its standard boot program?
Sorry Per,
but here it was the other way round. When I used SMSQ/E (on Marcels QPC2) for the first time, PE_BGOFF has had been the default. I have had even asked, if it's possible to use PIE (or PEX from hpr) with SMSQ/E just to hear that on SMSQ/E PE_BGON does the same. Similar is true for Boris Jakubiths History Device. I first has had been available for QDOS, and later Marcel ported it to the SMS versions of QDOS (at least for SMSQ/E on QPC2). But note: The QPC2 version does IMO not support all features of Boris original implementation.

I doubt Marcel ported the command line history. He would have written it from scratch.
