Hello! New American owner of a QL

Post by IIfx »

New QL owner here (just bought this past January) - just a plain QL with 640k internal memory upgrade - big plans for upgrades and getting immersed in the QL ecosystem. I have a stack of microdrive carts to test and check the felt on to start with.

Other British systems in my collection:
- ZX +2 128k
- Acorn RiscPC
- Acorn BBC B w DFS

Been collecting and tinkering with vintage computers most of my life, but only branched into the British end of the computing pond recently. Thankfully, I already had a tea addiction long before discovering 80's/90's UK computing technology. :D

My username handle is off of my single best find - a Macintosh IIfx with dual 40mhz Radius Rockets and an SUV's worth of software.

There are a few of us on the Forum from the US. One active user is on the east coast and I'm on the west coast.

Welcome!

Sure you have a 640 K  internal  memory epansion!

I have never heard of it. Internal memory expansion normally had a total of 512 KByte (and you have to send it to a company which fitted the upgrade). Disadvantage: It was slow memory, cause also the video hardware ("processor") accessed it and hat to share time with the CPU.

Most of the internal expansions hat that downside, but definitely not all of them. Internal doesn't automatically mean contended.

Hi IIfx,

Welcome! I'm new to the QL scene as well. Mine have been tucked away for decades and it feels like I am starting all over again. Enjoy! You will love this machine.
