Microdrive pads.

Post by Dave »

Hi all.

Here's the video of the making of the first test batch of microdrive pads:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzdYoEA0CQw

After this we dialed in the laser settings and we're really happy with the results.

I replaced the pads on three cartridges and left them formatting repeatedly for 24 hours. I then disassembled the cartridges and examined the back of the tape for wear and for debris in the cartridge. I found no visible additional wear over each cartridge before fixing. All the cartridges would format reliably.

I then took an unreadable cartridge that had lost its pad (but that would still turn smoothly, so I could guess the pad hadn't been drawn inside the case) and restored it to functionality. Two sectors were not readable, but the tape had been scratched quite heavily on the back before the pad was replaced. 203/205 is better than 0/205 :)

Rich, the laser is an option to use to make the ZX printer belts. It might be more cost effective than making a tooling. I'll keep you posted.

The store is in test mode at present, but it will go live towards the end of this week. I will make a post when orders can be placed. I invite people to register on the site using their real details, then fantasy shop using CC # 4242 4242 4242 4242 exp DEC 14 with CVV "123" - this will allow me to see that invoices generate properly, that mailing works properly, and that postage and QUANTA discounts are working correctly. If anyone sees any problems, could they mail me privately and let me know? I'll send a little bonus to anyone finding a problem. :)

Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement in getting me this far.

Great stuff Dave. I've never seen a laser cutter in action before, a bit like a phaser from Star Trek!

So your next project will be building external Microdrive drives to cope with all the resurrected Microdrive cartridges worldwide!

Actually, I am just in the middle of formatting a big batch of the neatest little black 2GB USB drives you ever saw. They're great.

Next step: taking them to laser engrave "Sinclair QL" on one side.

Step after that: see if I can add QPC2 V4 to "QL on a Disk" then put current versions of all the emulators on the disk. It's an updated version of the CD ROM, but much nicer looking. Photos when they're done - I have to make a jig first. :)
