Just for completeness:
In case you're searching for a non-Sinclair specific replacement, you can look for the re-programmable (EPROM) version of the 8049 - the 8749. This can be erased with UV light and re-programmed with the QL controller's firmware

So there's a place on eBay that sells 8749's in lots of 3 for under $10 including shipping.tofro wrote:Just for completeness:

Where do you find the controller firmware? Can you use an TL866II+ to read an 8049 and then burn an 8749? I can get a replacment 8049 from SellMyRetro for about $26 but 3 for under $10 that could be programmed would be better.

Re: MAB 8049H P A038 comapible?
Hi,
The TL866II+ or TL866xx does not support the 8049 or the 8749 PLDs, I have a HiLo Systems ALL03a DOS based programmer, that can programme the 8749 and can read the 8049.
I have been trying to see if new chips can be added to the TL866 series of programmer, but I can not find any information on this, there is an out source project to use the TL866 on Linux, which works quite well, but no way to extend the chips that can be programmed.
I did buy 10 Intel D8749 chips from a seller on eBay, but only 2 out 10 programmed okay, I got a refund on the 8 non-programmable 8749 chips.
So I guess there is a problem with the chip version or the chips I bought are defective.
I might look into getting more 8749 chips assuming they can be programmed with the Hermes code, I will offer them for sale, probably about £10 plus postage.

DIY Programmer work well, and 8749 can be bought in qty of 1 in AliExpress.
I just recently bought one and program and work in my QL

I read some of the information on the link, the HVEPROM programs the 8749, I have a spare Arduino Mega, maybe a nice electronics project.

Postage is OK too for multiple items.

The issue is the voltages that are needed to program an 8749 - plus the clock signal that must be fed to the xtal pins on the microcontroller - I would think it should be possible to produce an adaptor - but then you need to know the programming algorithm - it would be easier to use a dedicated programmer for that chip - there is an arduino based one - or to use one of the older universal programmers like the HiLo - I also have 2 of these and they work a treat for the 8749.Derek_Stewart wrote:Hi,

The All03a continues to be a useful programmer and chip tester, I can not find a modern equivalent. The draw back is no network connection, so I have use Floppy disk to exchange data.
