One issue I hadn't foreseen was that it requires a nano-SIM and the old SIM is a micro-SIM with no cutout.

Once, too impatient to wait for a new nano-SIM, I cut and filed up my micro-SIM to fit. It's possible, It worked, and it still working years later.

Yes, I've heard of others doing that successfully. I didn't want to risk it, having waited so long for the phone, a few days waiting for the new SIM was no bother.
The removable SIM and uSD carrier on this phone looks fragile and flimsy, another reason I didn't want to risk it.
There's also the slight problem of how ham-fisted I am with such matters

The FLX68000 is an interesting chip for a future "improved Gold Card" but would only come close to SGC speeds.

A potential point for the FLX68000 versus SGC would be costs and availability. But that alone hardly justifies the development work - also on the software side!

Now, the Coldfire V2 that Nasta intended to use for the Goldfire boards.... That's something else!

V2 is completely wrong! Getting a Coldfire V2 to run QL code natively is impossible, even with hugest software efforts. Misimplemented instructions do not trap out, and for the V2 that problem is far worse than e.g. for the much later V4e.

Nasta intended to use the first generation Coldfire, the one before the V2. Which was not a Coldfire internally, but a cut-down 68EC040 with multiplexed bus and only
1 KB data cache. The chip you probably mean was the MCF5102. It should not be confused with a post-V4 microcontroller from Freescale, which was misleadingly also named V1.

One can never too many microcontrollers and the Raspberry RP2040 on the Pico board is a very interesting entry into the market. The programmable I/O state machines sound intriguing. Must resist getting sidetracked with extra projects....
