Hi all,
I recently had a small victory and I have now obtained permission to share it with you.
A member of the QL community, Emiliano, asked me if he could send me a cartridge that was broken, but contained data of great sentimental value. He explained that it contained the college work of his daughter, who is now sadly deceased. The tape was jammed, and he did not want to lose these words and thoughts of hers.
I received the microdrive cartridge on Tuesday. The tape and pad had wrapped themselves around the white roller that contacts the capstan. I gently unjammed the tape. Next, I cleaned the goo of the remains of the felt pad off the tape using distilled water. I gently re-wound the tape and installed a new felt pad.
I was able to recover all of the contents of the cartridge except one sector. I was able to hand edit those contents. I duplicated the contents onto a 'fresh' microdrive cartridge and onto a floppy, and returned them.
I'm not an emotional person, but I teared up at being able to salvage someone's most precious memories.
If anyone else out there has a similar situation, please contact me. I will do the best I can to recover your data. All I ask is that you pay the cost of return postage, if you can.
