QL is 30 The distribution disk - Burning

I just downloaded the version 3.02 zip file. After unzipping and trying to burn to a DVD I'm having some problems.

When I try to burn with Nero version 6, First it complains there is not enough space on the disk.

If I then try to overburn the disk to make it fit, It complains about invalid fields.

At one point it complained about incorrect filenames, and that it was going to change them.

Has anyone managed to burn this onto a DVD, and did you need to make any special settings? Like setting a particular file system.

Hi,

I think this is a old problem with writing DVD images to DVD disks. Where the actual size of the image exceeds the size of the disk when the writer software is writing the image.

You want have a look at DVD Shrink that will shrink the size of the DVD image to fit onto the disk. I hthink it removes any DVD menu structure, which is not really applicable to this DVD image.

I use USB drives and also have on my file server linked by WIFI to QPC2/Qemulator very easy. I suppose I could link the Q60 to QPC2 via sernet and connect to the networked link to The Distribution files... but this would be only 115Kb/sec, not fast, but better than nothing.

After making the first post, I checked the PDF on the website where I downloaded it and Urs König says

"Please keep in mind that even when supplied on a DVD The Distribution is designed for use with a computer rather than a DVD player and TV set. Even possible and supported, I recommend to not using The Distribution as a physical DVD. Running off a DVD is slow, static and sometime noisy."

"I highly recommend storing the content of The Distribution on your computer(s) or even on your file server(s). Just unzip THE_DISTRIBUTION.ZIP at your preferred storage location."

I don't know that I want to dedicate 5Gb of hard disk space to this, so I will probably squeeze this onto one DVD, or I may split it into parts, a DVD and a CD.

Martin

So is it really impossible to burn "the distribution" as is (without squeezing, splitting and so on) :?:

I had another play with this, and I have got it onto one DVD.

I had to remove the German versions of the QL Today magazine to make room. And burn the disk in UDF format to get rid of the error message about 300 odd files needing renaming. It still left 9 or 10 files which Nero wanted to rename, but this was OK as they were all photos which did not have any links to them in Web pages.

At a quick test it all seems to work OK.

I had to carefully hand-select what additions and updates to be included or omitted and also to seek for duplicates to save space. As a direct result the unZIPped content (folder THE_DISTRIBUTION of THE_DISTRIBUTION.ZIP) of the latest version 3.04 fit on a physical DVD. At least when burned on my PC with some no-name media.
