Are there any additional signals around the ROM socket - as I've spotted 3 rows of pads, but only 2 are required for the original ROM socket?

Two rows have parallel connection, because of different connectors have 2.54 or 5.08 mm between rows.
Modern connectors - 5.08mm, but old QL connector - 2.54.

Unfortunately, we need only mass production ( big batch ) for QL case to have the resonable price. Case - last big problem.

This was exactly my experience too. I had to put a second row of contacts in for the same reason.

I have many Samsung KM4164 and no 4464.
Because of this I didn' change this part.

That is mass produced, and we can try some negotiation about suprlus production for QL use.

What about utilizing an existing (thick) keyboard? Would it be adaptable as a case?

Not ideal as it lacks the function keys.

Beyond that: quite a bit of "getting-used-to" involved if you don't have a ZX Spectrum background.

My muscle memory got quite a bit confused when I first tried the Next.
