I've an original Model B which has been running my Sendmail/Dovecot server for 8 years solid. It's even got the original SD card. Reliable little things.

Alan
Hi,

I have a PI 2B running RISC OS, very smooth and probably many times faster than the fastest Acorn hardware.

Would a RasPI have enough umph to run a internet-facing web server? Im thinking of Knoware.no, which is mainly simple, hand-written HTML, and with very little traffic. How about power consumption of running 24/365? Do you, or does anyone, know?

Low traffic site? Sure, with ease. Power consumption depends on the exact model, but most use only 1-2 Watts, the Pi 4 a bit more

This might help, it's a blog posting about how Mythic Beasts are offereing Raspberry Pi 4 powered web hosting. They used to offer it on Pi 3 and 2 too I believe.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/websit ... ic-beasts/

So, the Pi is very capable of service web sites.

As for the power draw, this comparison will help too:

I have a Pi 3B+ running PiHole (ad blocker) on my network, plus, it's serving as my router's DNS server. It's running 24/7 and so far, MrsD hasn't noticed an increase in the electricity bill! ;) Whatever power is does cost is well worth it for the serious lack of tracking and adverts. Other than Arsebook and YouTube of course, I believe those ads are not the usual ones where the ad is requested from a site but are "embedded" in your stream.

HTH

Cheers,
Norm.

Re: RasPI as web server
Thanks guys! Very helpful! I set up a web server before, but that was years ago. I guess Ill have to start learning from scratch, so itll take a while to get going. Security might be a hassle, though. Although Id keep the system air gapped from my home network, I guess someone could, for example, upload objectionable material to it without me noticing.. Well, Ill just have to jump off that bridge when I get to it.
