The second item is a CST Q-Disc v1.18 according to the print on the eprom.
Not quite sure what make the 256k RAM is, though.

I missed out on that weird QL with the 4 way expansion just went for too much. I've seen four auctions for those 4 way expansion boards and they all sold well but just who are the people buying them? We never find out

There will be a steady flow of TF MPlanes coming up over the coming months. They're widely regarded as the best backplane out there. They're all brand new - there are around 45 in mid-manufacture.

I like the mPlane, but find its layout quite restrictive, as you cannot put a QL into a tower case with it (as it has two sockets side by side)...

Not even vertically?

Might be difficult to fit it in vertically with the disk drive bays etc.... (plus you would need to find a way of attaching it to the PC case)

Both problems which apply equally to any other backplane - you need to support the QL board and daughter cards, within a volume that has lots of pre-allocated space. A nice twist with the mPlane is that you have some flexibility on positioning on the front or back of the board.
On the other hand, I don't think the "perfect" backplane has been designed yet - what would it be like?

Tea making facilities would be a good start!
