Could anyone please recommend a telnet or terminal emulator program for the QL? (that will emulate a vt100), preferably one that is free to download, or still available.

You might also want to try QLTERM: https://github.com/janbredenbeek/QLTerm
This includes a BASIC procedure to connect to telnet systems using an emulator which supports TCP/IP, such as QPC2 or Q-emulator. This way you don't need a serial-to-TCP emulator.
